Harnessing wild plants to feed pigs

Making weeds useful and reducing animal feed costs is a benefit for any farmer or animal producer. With the aim of helping organic pig producers to use 100% from organic and local feed, the project OK-Net EcoFeed produced a catalog of different weed/wild plant species to feed pigs, contributing inspiring ideas to feed pigs with alternative products.

The OK-Net EcoFeed project is represented by partnerships from 11 European countries, including the feed industry, farmers and farmer organisations, research institutes, universities and consulting firms.
The project produced a catalog presenting a list of weeds traditionally used to feed pigs with an analysis of which species are the best for food and which are the best source of forage production. All plants are wild species and valid for organic farming. However this list is always useful for farmers and technicians of any agricultural production mode.

It should be noted that most of the species in this catalog are widely distributed. It also includes information on the parts of the plants to be consumed and the treatments recommended before feeding the pigs.
